GPA pays a lump sum if an accident causes death or permanent disablement, with the amount for each kind of disablement set out in a scale in the policy. Most plans also reimburse medical expenses for accidental injuries, and some add benefits such as weekly payments while an employee cannot work.
Most plans cover accidents at any time, at work or not. The premium depends on the kind of work employees do, grouped into occupation classes: office work is the lowest class and costs the least to cover.
For example, an employee sprains an ankle badly playing futsal after work. GPA can pay the clinic visit, X-ray and physiotherapy costs up to the plan’s accident medical limit.
GPA does not replace work injury compensation insurance under WICA, which is a separate legal requirement for many employees.
