GHS (group hospital and surgical)

Group insurance that pays employees’ hospital and surgery bills, from the ward charges to the surgeon’s fee, up to the limits of the plan.

GHS is the core of most employee benefits schemes in Singapore. It pays for an employee’s stay in hospital and for surgery, including day surgery, within the limits of the plan the company chooses.

Each plan sets a daily room and board limit or a ward class, a limit on surgical fees, and limits on items such as intensive care, in-hospital doctor visits and hospital services like medicines, tests and implants. Most plans also pay for specialist visits and tests before an admission and follow-up care after discharge.

Plans come in levels. Among the plans in our calculator, the entry plans pay for a 4-bed ward in a public hospital and the top plans pay for a single room in a private hospital. When a bill goes past the GHS limits, group major medical (GMM) can pay part of the difference.

For example, an employee has her appendix removed and stays three nights in a public hospital. GHS pays the ward charges, the surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees and the hospital services, each up to its limit.
