Group cover, explained plainly

These are the covers most employee benefits packages in Singapore are built from. Here is what each one does, who it suits and how they fit together, so you know what your team needs before you compare prices.

Health

Care when staff are unwell

Hospital cover comes first. GP, specialist and dental cover are usually added on top of it.

Hospital & surgical (GHS)

Ward, surgery and intensive care bills, up to the plan’s limits. The core of most schemes.

Major medical (GMM)

Protection

A lump sum when it matters

Term life is the base. Personal accident and critical illness are often added to it.

Term life (GTL)

A lump sum for the family if an employee dies or becomes totally and permanently disabled.

About term life
An employee arriving at the office on crutches with his ankle in a cast, colleagues carrying his bag and wheeling over a chair

Personal accident (GPA)

Lump sums for accidental death or disablement, plus accident medical bills.

About personal accident

Building a package

How most companies put it together

There is no single right package. This is the order most employers work in, and the one our adviser will usually walk you through.

  1. 01

    Start with hospital cover

Group hospital and surgical insurance protects against the largest bills, and most other health covers can only be bought with it.

  2. 02

    Decide on everyday care

Add GP and specialist cover, and dental if you like, for the care staff use through the year. This is where co-pays and panel clinics matter.

  3. 03

    Add protection

Term life gives each employee’s family a lump sum. Personal accident and critical illness can sit alongside it.

  4. 04

    Choose levels and categories

Pick a plan level for each cover. Different categories of staff, such as managers and others, can have different levels if each category is applied consistently.

  5. 05

    Compare, then decide

We put quotes from our panel of 14 insurers side by side, benefit by benefit, and explain the differences. You make the call.

Common questions about group cover

See all FAQs

Most companies start with group hospital and surgical cover, because it protects against the largest bills and other health covers are sold on top of it. Term life is a common second step.

Riders such as major medical, outpatient and dental must be with the same insurer as the hospital cover they sit on. Protection covers can sometimes be placed separately, but one insurer is usually simpler to run.

Most SME packages start from 2 employees, and we quote for companies of any size. Very small groups may face stricter rules on pre-existing conditions and ages.

Most group plans are for full-time employees, and some insurers accept part-timers who work a minimum number of hours. Employees on work passes can usually join. S Pass and Work Permit holders also need the medical insurance the law requires, which some insurers quote separately.

On the date agreed with the insurer, once it has your signed proposal form and employee list. We set out the steps and timings with your quote.
