Renewal

The point, usually once a year, when a group policy ends and the insurer offers terms for the next year.

Most group policies run for 12 months. Before the end, the insurer sends renewal terms, which may change the premium, the benefits or both.

Premiums change for reasons such as claims, the team being a year older, changes in headcount and rising medical costs. The company can accept the terms, negotiate, or compare other insurers.

Starting the review six to eight weeks before the policy ends leaves time for questions, comparison quotes and a switch without a gap in cover.
