Most group term life plans pay the sum insured if an employee becomes totally and permanently disabled, as well as on death. Cover for TPD usually stops at an age set in the policy.
Definitions differ. Some plans pay if the employee cannot work in any job, others if they cannot do their own job, and most also count specific losses such as the loss of sight in both eyes or the use of two limbs.
Many plans require the disability to have lasted for a period, such as six months, before they pay.
