MediShield Life is the national basic health insurance for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, sized for subsidised wards in public hospitals. Many employees with group hospital cover are covered by MediShield Life too.
Some group hospital plans are integrated with MediShield Life: the claim goes to MediShield Life for its share, and the group plan pays the balance within its own limits. Because the group plan pays less of each bill, integrated plans usually cost less.
Foreign employees, other than Permanent Residents, are not covered by MediShield Life, so their claims are paid by the group plan alone. How a plan works alongside MediShield Life is set out in its policy wording, and it is worth asking about when you compare plans.
